Be Careful In Finding Help For Getting Out Of Debt

There are many advertisements offering help for getting out of debt quickly. When the economy slows down and people are facing financial troubles, the ads are everywhere. Some of the ads are genuine because they indeed want to give solutions to your debt problem. However, some are not and they only want to take advantage of your situation. You need to be able to differentiate between the two or else you will fall into a trap which will make the situation even worse.

A wolf among sheep

This wolf is called payday loan and they come under a variety of names. They seem to be a savior for people who are in serious debt problems, but in reality what they want is your money. It is very common for these companies to charge high interest rates even if the debts are relatively small. Furthermore, the debtors have to sign a contract stating that their properties serve as guarantees. Recently, the government starts investigating companies that offer help for getting out of debt services to make sure that they are not scams.

Unfortunately, this effort from the government does little help for people who are in debts. People are looking for these companies that offer help for getting out of debt because they have nowhere else to go. Banks and other legitimate financial institutions don't want to help them because of their abysmal credit rating.

At last several states have tried to improve the situation by enacting legislation. In Florida, the government caps the interest rates and they also provide a formula to come up with proper interest rates. They also provide services so abused debtors can fight back against scam practices.

I am a victim, what should I do?

Contacting the Better Business Bureau in your area is the first thing that you should do. They can provide help in getting out of debt and they will tell you any appropriate authorities that will help you further.

If you feel that they do not provide much help, you should try the internet to find various non-profit organizations and government agencies that can provide help for getting out of debt. Some Legal Aid clinics are available for legal advice for free or a very small amount of fee. You need to know that certain amount of income is not qualified for this service.

There are many sources where you can find help for getting out of debt. The most important thing is to avoid those wolfs that will make your situation even worse. Help is available as long as you start from the right place.
