Miniature Breed Puppy Training
Why dog lovers have this preconceived notion that small breed dogs are more challenging to educate than medium sized or large breed puppies, I will never be able to know. Housebreaking a puppy, despite its size should not be problematic.
Small dog training, is no different from training a puppy of any other size. Whilst training any dog will have its peculiarities, based on its breed, almost all other features remain identical, and the technique to training the puppy should remain the same, irrespective its size.
With that said, I will stray from the rule here, and admit that small dog training may create issues in two arenas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Even so, this is not because the size of the dog breed is small, but 10 times out of 10, because of the owner.
If a small breed pup is aggressive and is hard to train, or if a tiny breed dog cannot be bathroom trained or poses challenges in being crate trained, it is the owner who has not knowingly contributed to this situation. Let us examine how and why.
Aggression.
Tiny dogs are enjoyed because they are adorable, they are like toy characters. Owners get pleasure from having their puppy sit on their laps. This specific indulgence is where the trouble starts. The natural aggressive characteristic of the puppy, is to declare ownership over its space, its food, even its owner; all puppies strive to be the alpha dog.
It is the aggressive streak in the canine animal that causes it to jump on to the lap of its mistress, especially when there are plenty of persons seated in the room.
This is a outright act of aggression. Instead of admonishing the animal, every owner bar none, would hug the pooch, even though it jumped on to their lap without being asked to, fostering the aggressive streak in the puppy. As a result the owner has accepted the dog's behavioral instinct to be the alpha dog.
Growling and getting upset at a a larger size dog is another obvious act of unwanted anger. To the owner, and even the people nearby, this is viewed as cute, because one dog is little while the other is big. Most owners pet and pat the pup instead of chastising it, when it exhibits this aggression towards a larger dog.
These are but instances as to why small dogs are aggressive, and definitely not because small dog training is different or difficult.
Potty Training.
Owners choose to lug their small puppies around where ever they are, even while they are at home and that makes it plain difficult to bathroom train them
It comes natural to the owners of small dogs to lug the animal to the designated place where the pup should go to the bathroom and then lug it back into the house.
It is this routine of carrying the dog to its appointed toilet area that is the cause of all dilemmas. In addition, ever since the pup is as a rule carried around so often it has no way of it suggesting to or notifying the owner that it has to poop.
Small dog training begins with treating the dog as any other large sized dog. They have to be taken to their pooping area on a leash. If owners discontinue carrying their small breed dogs they would have no obstacles in training them.
Dog crate training, is the most exciting part of pup training, and so it can be, even in Small Dog Training.
