Harmful Drinking Leads To Mental Health Issues And Depression, An Enabling Wife, And Motivation For Constructive Change
It took several years but Sarah finally decided that she had enough with her husband's careless and excessive drinking. She was tired of seeing Keith come home after midnight from drinking rather than spending time with the family. She was also tired of the DUI Keith recently got. Moreover she was fed up from making explanations for her spouse when he couldn't show up for work on time due to his abusive drinking.
In a similar manner, she was anxious about the fact that their relationship was deteriorating due to Keith's abusive and hazardous drinking. And lastly she was tired of the risky financial dilemma into which he had put his family due to his abusive drinking behavior.
One morning when Sarah was pondering what she could do about her husband's abusive and hazardous drinking, she got to the point that she honestly had to do something to cut into the damaging cycle of Keith's unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior. So Sarah looked in the local yellow pages under "alcohol treatment" and discovered numerous rehabilitation clinics that were all located less than thirty-five miles away from where she and Keith resided.
When Sarah called each rehab clinic she introduced herself and stated that her husband was manifesting abusive and hazardous drinking behavior. She also said that her husband had a comprehensive health insurance program at his place of employment and that residential or outpatient alcohol treatment would be covered if a physician in the company health network authorized the rehabilitation.
After listening to Sarah discuss her husband's unhealthy and excessive drinking, the physician in a supportive but firm way explained to Sarah how she more likely than not adding to her spouse's careless drinking through the months and the years. How? Basically by covering for him rather than letting him suffer the results of his abusive and hazardous drinking behavior.
More to the point, the therapist stated to Sarah that she may have been accidentally enabling Keith's abusive drinking behavior. The therapist also underscored the fact that Sarah would not be able to control her husband's conduct. With the guidance and support of the rehab team at the rehab facility, however, she would not only be able to learn how to avoid contributing to Keith's careless drinking but she would also be able to learn how to encourage him to schedule an appointment at the treatment center so that he could talk about his abusive drinking behavior with a therapist.
The good news was that after Sarah explained this to Keith and he saw that she was serious, he told her that he had been extremely worried about his unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior and that he was quite relieved to hear that Sarah wanted to do something positive about his careless drinking behavior. Consequently, he made an appointment to see a healthcare professional at the local alcohol treatment facility.
While simply calling a rehab center does not ensure that a person's careless drinking behavior will become a non-issue or that a person will automatically be more willing to learning about alcohol abuse facts, making an appointment is without a doubt a compulsory step in the treatment process. And since Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting quality help for his drinking problems, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the likelihood of a successful recovery was greatly increased.
