When I bought a used notebook off an online auction site, it didn't feature a hard drive. In my search for a laptop HD, I found ways to create a disc drive through compact flash memory.
I bought a bootable CF to 2" IDE Adapter. That adapter enables you to use a compact flash card as the primary harddrive.
This adapter connects on the 44-pin connector for most laptops. I've noticed that some notebook connectors have a pin hole in the middle blocked, having the adapter not fit. I just imagine you could snip over pin or bend it backside on the adapter and it ought to fit, but I've not experimented with it personally.
You can boot on almost any OS from a CF cards using this kind of adapter. I would recommend using Windows 98 as your os. Windows XP makes just too many read/write cycles that could shorten living span on the memory. Windows XP requires not less than 3 GB to install. Windows 98 just
uses a minimum of 256 MB to setup.
It's possible choose Windows XP as your os. I would up grade into a microdrive. But be careful, installing Windows XP the standard way, it can get stuck in a endless loop. There is a key to get it to setup effectively, but I've not figured it out yet. I think it would need files transferred from your standard laptop hard drive.
The best benefit to applying a CF card as a disc drive is that in case your laptop gets dropped, the memory is more likely to survive the drop than a typical hard disk.
The new small laptops work with a similar set up that is called a Solid State Drive (SSD).
I use this adapter and also a 2 GB card for my laptop. It does work nicely using Windows 98 and I have added in a Wi-Fi card for Net access.
